For those of you who are interested in the development of higher education in post-apartheid South Africa, in African higher education, and in comparative international higher education, the recent publication by the Council of Higher Education in South Africa of a 20-year review, South African Higher Education Reviewed: Two Decades of Democracy will come as a welcome addition to the literature.
Framed around eight Task Team Reports, the Review focuses on the themes of Regulation, Governance, Teaching and Learning, Research, Community Engagement, Academic Staffing and Funding. An Overview chapter, to which I together with Colin Bundy, Jon File, Mala Singh and Denyse Webbstock was a contributor, provides historical and comparative international context as well as a bird’s eye view of the thematic terrain.
